Dogs
Dogs are allowed at Big Basin Redwoods State Park only in paved areas, on a leash no longer than 6 feet: the parking lot area and the paved North Escape Road, a park road closed to cars. They are not allowed on any trail or unpaved fire road, including the Redwood Loop, and not anywhere at Rancho del Oso, its campground or Waddell Beach. California State Parks says dog access will grow as more paved roads are repaired.
Dog Rules at a Glance
Where Your Dog Can Go
- Main parking lot area: on leash
- North Escape Road: the paved park road, closed to cars, that runs from the day-use area. The 2026 infosheet suggests it for an hour's walk with a leashed dog. Agency pages give different distances for the dog-friendly stretch, so stay on the paved surface and follow the signs.
Where Dogs Are Not Allowed
- Every trail, including the Redwood Loop Trail and the trail to Sempervirens Falls
- Unpaved fire roads such as Gazos Creek Road and Middle Ridge Road
- Any part of Rancho del Oso, including the walk-in campground
- Waddell Beach
Why the Rules Are Strict
Big Basin protects old-growth habitat for wildlife such as the endangered marbled murrelet, a seabird that nests high in the redwoods. Since the 2020 fire, the forest is also regrowing, and California State Parks asks visitors to keep to open areas while it heals.

Tips for a Visit With a Dog
- Bring water for your dog as well as yourself. The park has no drinking water.
- Watch the heat. The infosheet warns that temperatures can pass 100°F on hot days, and pavement gets hot.
- Never leave a dog in a parked car.
- Pick up after your dog and pack out the bags.
- Keep your dog away from wildlife; feeding wildlife is illegal.
